ReSails' Fairweather shell

ReSails' Fairweather shell

Need to find a great gift for a sailor? With "sailing" clothing offered in every mall and in dozens of catalogs, it can be difficult to figure out what's authentic and usable and what's just marketing hype.

No chance of missing the mark with gear from a company called ReSails. Based in Newport, Rhode Island, the center of the universe for sailors, ReSails makes completely functional and totally unique jackets, vests and gear bags from old sails. Complete with sail number, batten pockets, reef points, zig-zag stitching and webbing.

The Fairweather Shell combines old sail panels and waterproof nylon to make a totally windproof jacket that's perfect as a windbreaker over a sweater in cool, brisk weather or over a polo shirt in warmer breezy weather.

A drawcord hood rolls in the collar, and there are adjustable velco cuff closures and a front zipper covered by a storm flap made of nautical webbing. The pockets have velcro closures and webbing flaps.

Standard sizes are small, medium, large and extra large, with custom sizes also available. Color choices are navy, red, green and white.

ReSails' store is at 375 Thames Street in Newport. The price of the Fairweather Shell is $189.
